- MEN’S & WOMEN’S SINGLES
GOLD MEDAL RESULTS
-
- SILVER IN THE SINGLES BUT AUSTRALIA
TAKES OUT THE TOURNAMENT AT THE TOP OF BOTH MEN’S AND WOMEN’S LADDERS
-
- It was Malaysia’s afternoon today with two for two in the
gold medal stakes.
-
- World number three Safuan Said proved too strong for
Australia’s Brett Wilkie in a game that was anyone’s until end sixteen.
The scores were level after end three, 2-2. Wilkie followed with a
single but a four by Said gave him a three shot lead after the 5th
end.
-
- Wilkie then scored a 1 but a 3 on the 7th gave
Malaysia a 5 shot margin – the next eight ends were tightly contested and
after 15 ends there was just one shot in the match with Malaysia 13-12 up.
-
- Said surged ahead over the next eight ends to claim
Malaysia’s first gold medal with a final score of 21-12.
-
- The host nation was kept to a second silver in the
women’s discipline with Siti Zalina Binti Ahmad proving too strong
for the young Aussie Kelsey Cottrell, 21-17.
-
- As with the women’s fours this morning, Australia fought
a tough battle with an incredibly close game to the end.
-
- Cottrell opened the match strongly with a 4 and a 3 in ends
one and three to be up 7-2. Three shots in the 4th and 5th
put the Malaysian back to within 2 shots of the Aussie.
-
- By the 10th, Australia was up by 1 shot with a
10-9 lead. Cottrell’s 2 on end eleven was answered quickly by
the Malaysian with 3 over the next two ends levelling the score at 12 a
piece after the 13 ends.
-
- A 2 on the 14th put the Malaysian in the lead
for the first time but the world number eight replied with a 2 levelling the
scores yet again at 14-14 on the 15th end.
-
- By end 17 the young Australian had regained the lead,
16-17. From then it was Malaysia’s turn to power ahead with 5 shots
scored over the next 3 ends and lead 20-16.
-
- Cottrell tried valiantly to claw back and managed 1 more
shot on the penultimate end but Malaysia returned with the final shot
required on the 22nd end to take the match 21-17 and will fly
home with their second gold medal.
